Most Asked Questions

How is ZeroWater different from other systems?

Most conventional water filter jugs use 2 stage water filters whereas ZeroWater water filter jugs use a patented FIVE stage filter. ZeroWater filters use Ion Exchange Technology as opposed to a simple carbon only water filter. ZeroWater filters remove virtually all (99.6%) of the detectable dissolved solids while leading brands remove only up to 50%.

How long does a ZeroWater filter last?

This will depend on the TDS value of your tap water (you can measure this using a TDS meter). The TDS value indicates the level of organic dissolved solids present in your tap water. The higher the TDS, the faster the filter will need to be replaced.

Check the TDS value of your tap water and then use the table below to find out how much water you can filter with each ZeroWater filter.

TDS -> 000-001 -> clean water

TDS -> 002-050 -> low pollution -> 150+ liter per filter

TDS -> 051-200 -> average pollution -> 100-150 liter per filter

TDS -> 201-300 -> high pollution -> 50-100 liter per filter

TDS -> 301-400 -> very high pollution -> 30-50 liter per filter

TDS -> 401+ -> extremely high pollution -> less than 30 liter per filter

Do ZeroWater products contain BPA or BPS?

No, all ZeroWater products are BPA- and BPS-free

What is the ZeroWater TDS meter reading?

The TDS Meter included provides a reading of Total Dissolved Solids in Parts Per Million, ppm.

What are total dissolved solids?

Total Dissolved Solids, or TDS, are tiny non-organic particles found in water. They can come from natural sources like minerals in soil, but also from human-made elements such as road salts, old piping, pesticides, and fertilizers.

While not all dissolved solids are harmful, they do affect how water tastes and may signal the presence of unwanted substances. That’s why reducing TDS can make your water not only cleaner, but also taste noticeably fresher.

Use and care

Which filter fits in which water pitcher/dispenser?

The ZeroWater 5-stage replacement filter fits into all our pitchers and water dispensers.

Our specialty drinking cup filters fit into the ZeroWater water bottles. Unfortunately the bottles are no longer available to buy. However, if you have bought one in the past, you can still buy the filters that fit it.

What materials are ZeroWater products made of?

ZeroWater filters are made of BPA- and BPS-free polypropylene. ZeroWater water pitchers and water dispensers are made of BPA-free polypropylene and ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene).

How do I clean my ZeroWater pitcher/dispenser?

To keep your ZeroWater pitcher or dispenser fresh, simply wash it with lukewarm water and a mild soap. Rinse it thoroughly, then dry with a paper towel for the best results. We recommend avoiding cloth towels, as they can sometimes leave behind soap residue that may affect your TDS reading.

Important: Only clean the pitcher or dispenser, there’s no need to clean the filter itself.

Can I wash my ZeroWater pitcher/dispenser in the dishwasher?

No, we do not recommend using the dishwasher to clean your ZeroWater pitcher or dispenser.

Can I purify water other than tap water with ZeroWater?

ZeroWater filters are designed to reduce impurities in drinking water, and we’ve specifically tested them on tap water. While the filters may technically work on other types of water - like rainwater or stream water - we can’t guarantee the results outside of tested use.

If you’re considering filtering non-tap water, we recommend having it lab-tested first to ensure it’s safe to drink. Using ZeroWater this way is at your own discretion.

How long does it take for the water to run through a ZeroWater filter?

ZeroWater’s filtration process takes a bit longer than standard two-stage filters - and for good reason. Our advanced five-stage filter works harder to remove a wider range of contaminants, delivering cleaner and better-tasting water. A little extra time, a lot more peace of mind.

When should I change my filter

You should replace your ZeroWater filter when the TDS meter shows a reading of 006. We strongly recommend not using the filter beyond this point. Unlike standard filters, ZeroWater filters may cause a noticeable change in taste or smell once they reach the end of their lifespan.

In some cases, you might notice a change in taste or smell even before the meter reaches 006. This usually happens when your water contains a higher concentration of certain dissolved solids. If this occurs, we recommend changing the filter as soon as you detect the difference — your senses are a helpful early warning system.

For the cleanest and best tasting water, always trust both the meter and your own experience.

Troubleshooting

I’ve put in a new filter but I’m not getting a 000 value.

ZeroWater should always give a 000 reading right from the start. If it does not, here are the most common causes — and how to fix them:

Residue in the pitcher
Leftover soap, dust or old water can affect your reading.
Solution: Clean all parts with mild soap, rinse well and dry with a paper towel before trying again.

Filter not sealed properly
If the filter is not tightly screwed in, tap water may leak past the seal.
Solution: Remove the tank and screw in the filter firmly on a flat surface to ensure a tight fit.

Filter not fully flushed
Sometimes new filters need a little extra rinsing.
Solution: Run and discard a few full tanks of water, then test again.

Defective filter
If none of the above helps, there may be a small defect.
Solution: Check for cracks or an uneven silicone ring. If something looks off, send us a photo.

Why are there black/brown specks in my pitcher / dispenser’s water tank?

You might notice small black or brown specks floating in the top water tank, this is perfectly normal. These particles come from the activated charcoal layer inside the filter. They are harmless and safe.

To reduce the chance of particles escaping, we recommend filling your water tank gently and avoiding pouring water directly onto the top of the filter.

My system takes too long to filter.

If your pitcher or dispenser is taking longer than usual, it may be due to an air bubble inside the filter or a vacuum at the bottom of the water tank. Here is how to fix it:

Step 1: Lift the water tank slightly to release any vacuum pressure.

Step 2: If that does not help, remove the tank completely and gently squeeze the center of the filter a few times while water is flowing through. You may see air bubbles rise as the flow improves.

Step 3: You can also lightly tap the filter against the edge of your sink to help dislodge trapped air.

To prevent this in the future, avoid pouring water directly onto the filter. Instead, pour beside it into the tank so water flows in more gently.

My filter was damp when I opened it

Yes, that is completely normal. At ZeroWater, we rinse the filter contents before packaging, so you do not need to flush or soak it before use. This process can leave a bit of moisture or condensation inside the bag, it is harmless and nothing to worry about.

Important: Never pour hot or boiling water over the filter, as this can damage it and stop it from working properly.

The water coming out of my filter is black or gray.

Some brand new filters can let fine carbon particles into the water due to the way they’ve settled. This is completely safe and can be fixed by flushing the system until the water is clear

My filtered water tastes or smells strange.

ZeroWater gives your water a softer, cleaner taste, perfect for tea and everyday drinking. If you notice a sour or lemony taste, it usually means the filter is almost used up.

Check your TDS meter:

If it reads 006 or higher, it is time to replace the filter.

If it reads 001 but the taste is off, consider changing it a bit earlier.

Once you reach a reading of 001, we recommend testing after each refill.

About the filter

What substances does the ZeroWater filter remove?

Click here to view more information.

Do ZeroWater filters remove minerals from water?

Yes, ZeroWater filters remove all dissolved solids, including minerals. The filter does not separate good from bad; it removes everything to give you the purest water possible.

Most minerals your body needs come from food, not water, so this has little impact on a balanced diet. Still want minerals in your water? You can easily add them back by:

Adding a pinch of mineral salt or a drop of saline solution to your glass

Using mineral stones in your filtered water

Keep in mind: adding minerals will affect your TDS reading, so it will no longer show 000.

What is the best way to store unopened replacement filters?

Store your filters in a cool, dry, dark place. ZeroWater filters do not have an expiration date. However, we recommend using them within a year of buying.

Can I store my filter after opening?

The ZeroWater filter does not need to be constantly in water. If you are not going to use the filter for a few days, we recommend storing it in an airtight bag or container, and placing it in the fridge to ensure it stays fresh.

Please note: we recommend not storing or using a filter longer than 3 months after opening.

Can bacteria grow inside the filter?

The filter contains high-purity copper-zinc granulate which, in combination with activated charcoal, is very effective in reducing chlorine and hydrogen sulfide; it also prevents mold and bacterial growth.

Can I filter warm or hot water?

No. If you pour hot or boiling water over the filter, it will no longer function properly.

About the TDS meter

When should I use my TDS meter?

We recommend measuring the TDS value of your filtered water regularly, everyday or every other day. You can vary the frequency depending on your water consumption. Once the measurement shows 001 ppm, we recommend measuring after each refill.

What does the TDS meter measure?

The TDS meter (included with every ZeroWater pitcher) indicates the total dissolved solids in parts per million (ppm).

Can I keep my TDS meter in the refrigerator?

We do not recommend doing this, because the humidity in the refrigerator can cause the batteries to oxidize. It is best to store your TDS meter outside the refrigerator.

My TDS meter stays at 000. What does this mean?

The most likely cause is that the HOLD function is on. This function keeps the measurement on the screen so that you can read it outside the pitcher. Depending on the meter model, the display will show HOLD when this function is activated. You can deactivate it by pressing the HOLD button again. Then try again. This should resolve it.

Help, my TDS meter doesn’t work anymore.

The batteries may have run out (2x LR44 – type dependent). These batteries should be replaced periodically. You will find the battery compartment at the top of the meter, behind the cap. Try again after replacing the batteries.

What type of batteries does the TDS meter use

They take either 2 – 357A, 2-LR44 or 3-AG3 batteries which can be found anywhere you would buy a watch battery.

What are Total Dissolved Solids?

Total Dissolved Solids are tiny organic and inorganic substances found in water. They include things like minerals, salts, metals and sometimes pollutants. TDS can affect the taste, smell and appearance of your water.

These solids can come from natural sources like surface or well water, but also from materials your water touches along the way, such as plastic or old pipes.
